Fisayo Dele-Bashiru grateful for surprise Super Eagles call-up before brother Tom

Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has expressed his gratitude and surprise after being called up to represent Nigeria.

Dele-Bashiru made an immediate impact, coming off the bench to score the winning goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Libya in the first leg of their AFCON 2025 qualifier.

The 23-year-old Lazio player was introduced in the second half and found the net in the 86th minute, helping Nigeria secure a hard-fought win after struggling to break down the Libyan defence.

In an interview with The Nation, Dele-Bashiru shared his emotions about the opportunity to play for the national team. “I was surprised to get this chance at this stage of my career, but I am really grateful for it. I don’t take it for granted.”

He also mentioned his brother Tom Dele-Bashiru, who plays for Watford in the English Championship, and how they support each other. “Tom is doing well, and I didn’t expect to get a Super Eagles call-up before him. We joke about it, and I want to make him proud, just as he makes our family proud.”

Dele-Bashiru has made a strong start with the national team, scoring two goals and providing an assist in just two appearances.

The midfielder will aim to earn his sixth cap when Nigeria takes on Libya again in the second leg on Tuesday.
