Flying eagles defeats Egypt to win bronze

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria secured third place at the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating host nation Egypt 4-1 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on today Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Egypt took an early lead in the 3rd minute through Omar Hassan. However, Nigeria equalized early in the second half with a goal from Bidemi Amole. Despite dominating possession and creating more scoring opportunities, the match proceeded to penalties, where Nigeria converted four of their spot-kicks compared to Egypt’s one.

This victory will mark Nigeria’s fifth bronze medal in U-20 AFCON history, adding to their previous third-place finishes in 1995, 2009, 2013, and 2023.

Notably, substitute goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar made two much needed saves during the shootout, and defender Aminu Maigari was named Man of the Match for his performance.

The Flying Eagles’ performance in this tournament also secured their qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
