Former Nigeria international becomes first high-profile coaching casualty in the 2021/22 NPFL
Loses job with team sitting precariously midway through the season
Former Nigeria international Eddy Dombraye has been dismissed from his position as Lobi Stars Technical Adviser in the immediate aftermath of a 2-1 defeat at home to Abia Warriors on Matchday 18 of the 2021/22 NPFL season.
Eddy Dombraye was appointed in September 2021 at the end of the 2020/21 NPFL season as a replacement for former Technical Adviser Kabiru Dogo, who joined Wikki Tourist immediately.
Eddy Dombraye has seen his side pick up only 19 points from their opening 18 matches of the 2021/22 NPFL season. They are currently languishing in the relegation zone, one point from safety. His side won five, drew four and lost nine of their 18 NPFL matches. The defeat to Abia Warriors was their third consecutive one.
Dombraye is the second coach to get sacked this season in the NPFL after MFM FC relieved coach Gabriel Olalekan of his duties and replaced him with relatively unknown Ikechukwu Isiekwene in a bid to beat the drop. Coach Alli Jolomi has also replaced Kennedy Boboye at Akwa United after Boboye’s resignation.
Eugene Agagbe has been named as Lobi Stars interim coach after the sacking of Dombraye was confirmed.
A number of other high-profile coaches may soon face the same fate as Dombraye, including Finidi George at Enyimba, Edith Agoye at Shooting Stars and Salisu Yusuf at Kano Pillars.
