Francis Uzoho Linked with Move to ENY Ypsona for Fresh Start
Nigeria’s Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho could be on the move this summer, with reports linking him to newly-promoted Cypriot club ENY Ypsona.
The 26-year-old has struggled for game time at Omonia Nicosia, where he has played second-choice to Brazilian keeper Fabiano. Despite helping the club win the Cypriot Cup in 2022 and 2023, Uzoho has only made five league appearances this season and spent most matches on the bench.
Uzoho first joined Omonia on loan from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña in 2019 and signed permanently in 2021. At first, it seemed like a good opportunity for regular football, but he has found it hard to secure the number one spot.
Now, with ENY Ypsona earning promotion to the Cypriot First Division for the first time, the Limassol-based team are reportedly interested in bringing Uzoho in to add experience to their squad.
However, ENY Ypsona’s general director, Dimitris Vrahimis, did not confirm any move. In a recent interview, he said:
“It’s too early. I don’t want to comment.”
Vrahimis explained that the club is planning a big rebuild with a €3 million budget and will keep only 9 or 10 players from last season’s squad.
“Last year, we had a squad of 25–26 players. That group can’t compete in the top division,” he said. “We want to stay up and build something stronger long term.”
While he avoided talking directly about Uzoho, Vrahimis said the club is focusing on players who know the Cypriot league well.
Francis Uzoho, born in Nwangele, Imo State, Nigeria, started his football career as a forward before switching to goalkeeper at age 12 while training at the Aspire Academy in Senegal.
He rose to fame in 2017 when, at just 18 years old, he made his La Liga debut for Deportivo La Coruña – becoming the youngest ever foreign goalkeeper to play in Spain’s top division.
A move to ENY Ypsona could give Uzoho the chance to return to regular football and rebuild his career, especially with the Super Eagles goalkeeping position still open for strong competition.
