Frank Onyeka credits Africa Cup of Nations for Improved performance

Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka has attributed his improved performance on the football field to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament.

Onyeka, who played a crucial role for the Nigerian national team during AFCON 2023, highlighted the positive impact of the tournament on his footballing skill.

Despite Nigeria’s loss in the final against Ivory Coast, Onyeka’s consistent presence on the field throughout the competition was testimony of how important he was in midfield for the Eagles.

Following his return to club football, Onyeka displayed remarkable endurance and energy in Brentford’s Premier League match against Manchester City, despite the team’s 1-0 defeat.

Speaking after the game on Wednesday, February 20, Onyeka expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria in AFCON, hailing the physical and mental benefits gained from the experience.

“Going back to Africa, helping my country Nigeria, coming back fit, it’s been really good. I feel really fit,” Onyeka said.

“It was hard, but it was also good, especially defending counter-attacks.

” We [Brentford] came here believing we could do it again, so to lose 1-0 is sad, but it was a good performance.“

While the loss against Manchester City was disappointing for Brentford, Onyeka remained optimistic about the team’s performance, indicating a resilient mindset instilled through his experiences in AFCON.

Onyeka’s dedication to both club and country reflects his commitment to continuous improvement and excellence on the football pitch.
