Fufu consumption helped me score against Chelsea – Karim Adeyemi

Lagos-born Borussia Dortmund striker Karim Adeyemi revealed the secret to his searing pace that led him to score the winner against Chelsea in their Champions League Round of 16 clash on Wednesday. The 21-year-old put daylight between Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea with a brilliant solo effort in the second half of a 1-0 win.

With the match delicately poised and Chelsea in the ascendancy, Adeyemi picked up the ball in the half and sped past Enzo Fernandez before rounding the goalkeeper to score.

In an interview after the game, a journalist asked the Man of the Match for the secret behind his electric pace. Adeyemi responded by attributing his pace to good genetics from his dad and his consumption of Nigerian food. When pressed further for the name of the food, he revealed that it was fufu.

The 21-year-old forward has clocked the fastest speed in the Bundesliga this season. He was also one of the fifth-fastest player in the group stage of this season’s Champions League, clocking a top speed of 36.1kmph. Chelsea had a speedster of their own in Mykhailo Mudryk, but it was Karim Adeyemi who had an impact in the game.

Adeyemi has never been one to hide his Nigerian roots as he also spent time in Ibadan during the off-season. The youngster owns a semi-pro club in his native Nigeria, as well.
