Gauff and Fritz set to Lead U.S. at United Cup Again
The United States will head into the new tennis season with a familiar pairing at the front, as Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz lead the team’s United Cup title defence in Australia.
The mixed-team event begins on January 2 in Perth and Sydney and gives players valuable match time before the Australian Open later in the month.
Gauff, ranked third in the world, and Fritz, currently sixth, were central to last year’s run, which ended with a straight-sets win over Poland in the final. Germany claimed the title in 2024, but the Americans remain the most successful team so far.
This year’s field includes 18 teams, each made up of one men’s and one women’s player. Every tie features a men’s singles match, a women’s singles match, and a mixed doubles encounter, all played on hard courts.
Poland is again expected to pose a serious threat, led by world number two Iga Swiatek alongside Hubert Hurkacz, a former top-10 player. The U.S. will open Group A play in Perth against Argentina on January 3 before facing Spain two days later.
The tournament will then move to Sydney for the semifinals and final on January 10 and 11, where the champions will be crowned just days before the Australian Open begins.
