Gerrard has no regrets now as he revealed details of his collapsed £37.5m move to Chelsea in 2005

Steven Gerrard has no regrets now over his failed move to Chelsea from Liverpool for a reported fee of £37.5m in 2005.

The Rangers manager who wasn’t sure Liverpool wanted him to stay at the time said he was very close to joining Chelsea because of Jose Mourinho.

Steven Gerrard, in fact, thought his sale would have helped Liverpool built on their team at the time but he regretted his role in the whole matter.

“I regret the little bit of flirting back then and how that all blew up,” Gerrard told Gary Neville on Sky Sports Soccer Box.

“The fact is I didn’t know whether I was coming or going with Rafa at the time. Rafa was having conversations with me like ‘I know your agent is talking to Real Madrid and Chelsea’.

“I got a paranoid feeling at the time that Rafa would have taken money to try and build Liverpool on.

“Chelsea bid £37.5 million. At the time, massive amounts of dough but what would you get for that now?”

Neville joked: “Half a Fred [Manchester United midfielder]!”

Steven Gerrard said joining Chelsea was influenced by the idea of playing under Jose Mourinho but now that he ended his career playing only for Liverpool and no other English club, he has no regrets about what happened in 2005.

“[Jose] Mourinho was a massive part of that. A lack of maturity on my part allowed me to think about it and flirt with that idea a bit.

“But now I have no regrets at all because Liverpool are the club I love – and that’s the way it should be.”

Steven Gerrard went on to lead Liverpool to two Champions League finals where they lost and won one, he also helped the club claim the FA Cup in 2006.

During his 17 season at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard scored a total of 186 goals in 710.

He won the FA Cup twice (2001, 2006), the League Cup thrice (2001, 2003, 2012), the UEFA Cup in 2001 and Champions League in 2005.
