Ghana names 27-man squad for AFCON 2023

Ghana coach, Chris Hughton, has unveiled the 27-man squad that will represent the nation in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The squad features key players expected to play pivotal roles in the prestigious tournament.

Notable inclusions are West Ham’s prolific forward, Mohammed Kudus, who has been a goal-scoring sensation with 10 goals in all competitions.

Athletic Bilbao’s striker, Inaki Williams, adds firepower with his impressive record of eight goals. Captain Andre Ayew and deputy Thomas Partey maintain their leadership roles, while recovering Partey provides a significant boost to the team with Monaco defender Mohammed Salisu, overcoming early-season injury struggles, strengthens the defensive lineup.

Chris Hughton, in a press conference held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, January 1, 2024, stressed the importance of making bold decisions.

Exclusions from the squad include Baba Rahman and Fatawu Issahaku, who opted out, as well as injured duo Kamaldeen Sulemana and Tariq Lamptey.

Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey, recognized for outstanding performances in the Ghana Premier League, is among the three home-based players in the squad.

The 27-man squad will commence its camp in Kumasi from January 2, gearing up for the challenging Group B encounters against Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars, four-time African champions, will kick off their AFCON 2023 journey with a tough match against Cape Verde on January 14, followed by crucial encounters against Egypt and Mozambique.
