Giroud, & Mbappe make records as France beat Poland to make last eight

Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe put their names in the record books to help France beat Poland 3-1 and book a place in the quarterfinal in Qatar.

It was a great day for Les Bleus, Olivier Giroud, and Kylian Mbappe at Al Thumama Stadium where they chalked a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup with ease.

Olivier Giroud scored the first goal of the game in the 44th minute of the game from a pass from Kylian Mbappe.

The goal made the former Montpellier Hérault SC striker France’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals beating Thiery Henry’s record of 51.

Kylian Mbappe scored France’s second goal in the second half in the 74th minute with a curler.

Olivier Giroud started the move for this goal, his fine pass found Ousmane Dembele who passed the ball to Kylian Mbappe who scored a great goal.

The 23-year-old forward then completed his brace 91st minute with another curler. Again, Kylian Mbappe received the ball to the left of the penalty area before placing it expertly into the top-right corner of the net.

It was his fifth of the tournament surpassing his hauls of four goals which he scored in 2018.

He also became the youngest French player on record (since 1966) to score and assist in a World Cup knockout stage game (23y, 349d).

Kylian Mbappe also passed Pele’s World Cup record of 8 goals before 24 years of age.

There was still time for Robert Lewandowski to pull one back for Poland from the spot kick in the 99th minute as the Barcelona man ended the tournament with two goals.

As Poland make their way out of Qatar, France will now play the winner of the last 16 game between Senegal and England.
