Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria Records First Victory After Beating Cayman Islands in 3×3 Basketball
Team Nigeria has recorded its first victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after defeating the Cayman Islands 21-17 in their opening men’s 3×3 basketball Pool A match on Friday.
The win came shortly after Nigeria made its first appearance at the Games in the swimming events. Clinton Opute finished sixth in Heat 1 of the men’s 200m individual medley, racing against a strong field led by England’s Thomas Dean.
Nigeria, however, found success on the basketball court.
The team played with speed, discipline and confidence to overcome a determined Cayman Islands side and claim an important opening win in Pool A.
The result gives Team Nigeria a strong start in the group and boosts their hopes of progressing further in the competition.
There were celebrations in the Nigerian camp after the final buzzer as players embraced one another while officials applauded the team’s impressive display.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, was also at the venue to support the team. He joined the players and officials in celebrating the victory and urged them to stay focused.
“This is the kind of start we were hoping for. Congratulations to the team for their fighting spirit and determination. Enjoy this victory, but stay focused because the journey has only just begun. Nigeria believes in you, and we are confident you can achieve even greater success at these Games,” Olopade said.
His presence highlighted the National Sports Commission’s commitment to supporting Team Nigeria throughout the Games.
The victory is expected to give the Nigerian team confidence ahead of more events on Friday, including boxing and para powerlifting, where the country has strong medal hopes.
Nigeria is represented by 74 athletes competing in 10 sports at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the National Sports Commission aiming to win between 16 and 20 gold medals.
Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1950, Team Nigeria has won 271 medals, made up of 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze medals.
