Godswill Akpabio United FC Thrash Regnant Academy in 2025 Akwa Ibom State President Federation Cup Opener

Nigeria National League side Godswill Akpabio United FC announced their arrival in the 2025 Akwa Ibom State President Federation Cup in emphatic fashion, thrashing Regnant Football Academy 6-0 in the opening match at the Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday, February 4.

The debutants wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead in the 3rd minute when Emma Joe finished clinically from inside the box. Despite the early setback, Regnant Academy grew into the game, enjoying a fair share of possession and creating chances.

However, their inability to convert opportunities proved costly. In the 35th minute, Godswill Akpabio United FC doubled their advantage from a corner kick, with Harrison Ibukun heading home to punish Regnant Academy’s wastefulness in front of goal.

Iniobong Solomon, one of two first-half substitutes for Godswill Akpabio United FC, then made it 3-0, sliding in to get the ball over the line following a mistake by an opposition defender.

The second half saw Iniobong Solomon grab his brace, making it 4-0 as Godswill Akpabio United FC tightened their grip on the game. The non-league Regnant Academy, despite a spirited effort, struggled to cope with the intensity and quality of their opponents.

Substitute Austin Agbowo came off the bench to add a late brace, sealing a 6-0 rout and confirming Godswill Akpabio United FC’s place in the semi-finals, while Regnant Academy bowed out of the competition.

It was a commanding performance from Godswill Akpabio United FC, who lived up to their status as NNL heavyweights. The team, managed by ex-international Patrick Udoh, showcased their attacking depth and defensive solidity.

In his post-match reaction, Coach Patrick Udoh said he was not entirely satisfied with his team’s performance despite the big win, stating that the match also served as preparation for their upcoming NNL fixture against Sporting Lagos FC. Meanwhile, Coach Hope Michael of Regnant Academy described the outing as a valuable learning experience for him and his players.

With this victory, Godswill Akpabio United FC now await the outcome of the clash between Akwa United and Pillars Investors on Thursday, February 6, 2025, to determine their semi-final opponents.

The 2025 Akwa Ibom State President Federation Cup features eight teams, with matches running until February 23, when the champion will be crowned. The top two teams from the competition will qualify for the national Federation Cup, representing Akwa Ibom State.
