Gregg Popovich Steps Down as San Antonio Spurs Head Coach
Gregg Popovich has officially stepped down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, the team confirmed on Friday.
The 76-year-old will now take on a new role as president of basketball operations.
Popovich has not been on the sidelines since 31 October 2024 after suffering a stroke in November. In a heartfelt statement, he explained his decision:
“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach. I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff, and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organisation, community, and city that are so meaningful to me.”
Popovich leaves behind an incredible coaching record, with 1,422 regular-season wins and five NBA championships. His title count places him behind only Phil Jackson (11) and Red Auerbach (9) on the all-time list of most NBA championships won by a coach.
His new role will keep him closely involved with the team he led for nearly three decades.
