Guardiola insists Manchester City won’t emulate Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’

Pep Guardiola does not believe his Manchester City side will be able to emulate the famous Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ side of 2003/04 and finish the season unbeaten.

Manchester City currently top the Premier League with 25 points to their name having won all but one of their opening nine games of the season.

Despite their scintillating start to the new campaign, which has seen them score a total of 32 league goals, Guardiola has ruled out the prospect of his men ending the season without a defeat.

Speaking in the wake of his side’s 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, the City boss said he expected his side to lose at some point in the months ahead.

“We are going to lose games, of course,” he said.

“The only thing I think about as a manager, ever since my career started, is the next one and then the next one. So about this kind of records and this kind of situations, I know people like a lot of statistics in football, comparing what one has done and with the other one but I am happy for 11 wins in a row because it shows that we can win a lot of games in a row.”

Sergio Aguero equaled Manchester City’s all-time goalscoring record on Saturday as they beat Sean Dyche’s visitors to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The Argentine converted from the spot in the 30th minute before Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane added to the scoreline.

“We know that exactly that when we don’t play good we are going to win-lose games,” Guardiola added. “It doesn’t make any difference if the other team is not in the top five or six, any team can beat us.

“All we can do in every single game is to play as good as possible to deserve the respect of the opponents, and deserve the respect of the others, so they can look at us and say that team does a lot of good things on the pitch. That is all we want and that is all we seek.

“I am here to win the next one, then the next one and then in May and then we can say how was the season. But if you ask me if we can finish unbeaten I say that cannot happen.”
