Hamilton not punished for motorbike video

Lewis Hamilton will not face any punishment from police after footage emerged online appearing to show the Formula One world champion filming himself while driving a motorbike in Auckland.

The Mercedes driver visited New Zealand before turning his attention to starting the defence of his world title at the Australian Grand Prix this week.

Police were alerted to a video of Hamilton seemingly taking footage while riding a Harley Davidson, which is against the law in New Zealand.

But the 31-year-old bring will not face prosecution.

“Auckland City Police will be taking no further action in relation to recent media publicity about Lewis Hamilton and his motorcycle journey in Auckland,” a police statement said.

“The video footage available does not provide us with sufficient enough evidence that an offence has occurred.

“We would like to reiterate our earlier statements that police take the issue of mobile phone use whilst driving or riding very seriously, it is a significant distraction and a major risk to all road users.”
