Following their 4-3 penalty shootout victory over USA, Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured a place in the history book and it’s not too early to acknowledge their place.

FLAMINGOS AT THE FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP

The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was first hosted by New Zealand in 2008.

Nigeria played in the maiden edition and exited the tournament in the group stage.

To date, Nigeria has participated in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on six occasions (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and the ongoing 2022 edition).

The Flamingos were absent at the last edition of the tournament (2018) after failing to Cameroon in the qualifiers.

BEST FINISH

Prior to the ongoing India 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s best finish was the Quater-final in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

The other two ended in group stage exits (2008 and 2016).

THE HISTORIC MOMENTĀ

Nigeria began the India 2022 with a 1-2 loss to Germany.

The Flamingos recovered to defeat New Zealand and Chile to reach the competitions quarter-final.

Against the United States of America, the Flamingos were rated as underdogs but like everyone who is eyeing a spot in history, the girls braved the odds.

A 1-1 regulation time ensured the two teams had to be separated by the lootery of penalties.

Nigeria triumphed 4-3 on penalties to reach a first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup semi-final.
