How Akwa Ibom people reacted to Akwa United Chairman’s nomination for Commissioner role
On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the people of Akwa Ibom State were excited to hear that Governor Pst. Umo Eno had sent the list of commissioner nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening. Among the names on the list was Elder Paul Bassey, the Chairman of Akwa United FC, who is widely tipped to take over as the Commissioner for Sports.
SportsRation correspondent Nsikakabasi Akpan was at the Uyo Township Stadium, where he spoke to several sports enthusiasts to gauge their reactions to the nomination. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many people confident that Bassey, a seasoned sports veteran, would be the right person to lead the Ministry of Sports.

Meanwhile, there were others who were not completely convinced of the Akwa United Chairman’s ability to thrive in the political field, where decisions are not made without regard for the wishes of the government of the day.
However, the majority view was one of joy, with fans gathering around the Commissioner nominee as he watched the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Federation Cup match between Dakkada FC and Heavens Race Academy, which saw the non-league side emerge as 5-4 penalty shootout victors at the Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
