How Nigerian-born NBA star Precious Achiuwa’s “What If Unlimited” Is Giving Kids in Nigeria Hope and Opportunity
Precious Achiuwa, a forward for the New York Knicks, has been helping kids in Nigeria through his nonprofit, What If Unlimited, since 2021. The name comes from a hashtag Achiuwa used in high school: #whatif. This reminded him that every choice was a new opportunity.
Achiuwa moved to the United States from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in 8th grade to chase his dream of playing basketball. He understands what it’s like to grow up in challenging conditions, and he wants to help kids in Nigeria who are in the same situation.
“There are a lot of kids who were in the same place I was when I was young. I want to show them that anything is possible,” he says. “If I could do it, they can too.”
Every summer, What If Unlimited runs a week-long camp where kids learn life skills, get meals, receive free gear, and spend time with Precious. In 2023, two lucky campers were even sent to Canada for special programs. As the popularity of basketball grows in Nigeria, Precious hopes to make the game more accessible for all kids.
“This camp is more than just an event for Precious. It’s who he is,” says Nichole Jiminez, Executive Director at What If Unlimited. “Not everyone can truly understand the kids they are helping, but Precious connects with them because he shares their experiences. That’s why the camp is so successful and keeps growing.”
