How Xabi Alonso reacted to Victor Boniface’s failed Al Nassr move?

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has put an end to speculation surrounding Victor Boniface’s potential move to Al-Nassr, affirming that the Nigerian striker remains an integral part of his squad.

Boniface was absent from Leverkusen’s 2-0 victory over Sparta Prague in the Champions League, a win that secured their place in the last 16. Goals from Florian Wirtz and Nathan Tella ensured Alonso’s side finished sixth in the 36-team standings, setting up the possibility of a high-profile knockout clash against Celtic, Manchester City, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich.

Despite reports linking Boniface to a move to Saudi Arabia, Alonso swiftly dismissed the rumours, confirming that the forward remains in his plans.

“He will train again tomorrow. I believe he is staying with us,” Alonso said. “So I have to say that I am satisfied, I am happy. He is comfortable here, so I don’t believe that this is a big stress for him.”

The 23-year-old has been instrumental for Leverkusen in European competitions, scoring six goals in 11 appearances in the Champions League and Europa League since his arrival from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023. However, he has struggled with injuries this season, missing 12 matches due to a persistent hamstring issue.

Boniface recently returned to action, making the bench for Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw with RB Leipzig, but was not included in the squad for the win over Sparta.

This season, the Nigerian forward has registered eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions. In the Bundesliga, only Florian Wirtz (7.13) and Patrik Schick (7.92) have recorded a higher expected goals (xG) total than Boniface (6.54) for Leverkusen.

With Alonso’s firm stance on keeping Boniface, Al-Nassr have since shifted their attention to Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran as they look to reinforce their attack.
