‘I did not apply’ – Lee Carsley reflects on England National team job opportunity
Lee Carsley has shared how he became the interim head coach of England’s national football team. He took over the role after Gareth Southgate stepped down.
So far, under Carsley’s leadership, the Three Lions have played three matches, winning two and losing one. The loss came in a 2-1 defeat against Greece at Wembley Stadium in the UEFA Nations League.
Speaking about his appointment, Carsley revealed he didn’t formally apply for the position. “I didn’t apply for it,” he told The Sun. “I’ve been working with the Under-21s, and I’m really happy with my job. As an FA employee, I was asked to take the senior team, and it’s a huge privilege—one of the proudest moments of my career.”
He added, “I feel honoured to manage the senior team. Being on the inside, I can see how much potential this group has. This is one of the best jobs in world football, with a real chance to win.”
Carsley believes the next permanent coach will have a great opportunity to succeed with the team. “The coach who comes in will have a fantastic chance of winning, and we deserve the best manager available.”
England will play Finland next in the UEFA Nations League, hoping to recover from their loss to Greece.
