ICC U-19 World Cup qualifier: Nigeria crush Mozambique, set sights on Ghana

Nigeria’s U-19 cricket team, the Junior Yellow Greens, is set to face Ghana in their third ICC U-19 World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier in Tanzania today.

The Junior Yellow Greens are riding high after a record-breaking performance against Mozambique on Sunday at the Gymkhana Ground.

Nigeria set the highest total of the tournament with 362 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs.

Hossana Omokhobio led the charge with a well-crafted 69 runs off 95 balls. He was supported by Peculiar Egamasi, who scored 53 runs off 48 balls, and captain Gafar Kareem, who made 45 runs off 32 balls and was named Player of the Match for his impactful performance.

Mozambique’s response was lackluster, as their batting lineup collapsed under pressure, managing only 48 runs in 18.5 overs. Nigeria secured an emphatic victory by 314 runs, marking one of the most decisive wins in the tournament’s history.

Captain Gafar Kareem, who received the Player of the Match award, emphasised the team’s focus on their upcoming game against Ghana. “The plan to bat first was effective on a flat wicket, and we managed to score big runs. We have a crucial game coming up against Ghana, and we aim to carry this momentum forward,” he said.

The Junior Yellow Greens’ performance in the Division 2 qualifiers will be critical as they aim to advance to the next stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
