Iga Swiatek says Tennis makes sense with Spin
Iga Świątek said she prefers longer rallies and hitting with more spin, because that’s how she learned to play tennis.
Speaking at the Australian Open, Swiatek was asked about facing opponents who also play with a lot of spin and why she seems comfortable in those matchups.
“I always felt that since I’m playing like that, I understand their game a bit better,” Swiatek said. “I feel like tennis makes more sense when players build the rally more.”
The world No. 2 explained that her preference for longer exchanges comes from how she learned the game and the tennis she grew up watching.
“This is what’s different with men’s tennis than women’s tennis,” she said. “Guys play longer rallies, and sometimes in women’s tennis it’s just one shot, and that’s it.”
Swiatek added that her influences played a big role in shaping her style.
“It’s just how I’ve been raised,” she said. “Also, most of the tennis I watched was Rafa.”
Swiatek said she learned a lot from watching Rafael Nadal and tries to bring that style into her own game.
“I also enjoy watching it as well,” she added.
