India 2022: Flamingos win away in Ethiopia, put one foot in FIFA U-17 WWC

Nigeria’s U-17 Female side the Flamingos picked up a vital 1-0 win away in Addis-Ababa as they took on their Ethiopian counterparts at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in the final qualifying round for the India 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Having dispatched Egypt with ease in the preceding round, the Nigerian girls were looking to ease past their Ethiopian counterparts and book their ticket to the tournament in India.

The Flamingos controlled proceedings from the start and went in front in the 36th minute through Opeyemi Ajakaye. The forward was played in by Taiwo Afolabi before finishing with aplomb to give the Nigerian girls the lead.

Both sides threatened each other for the remainder of the game but could not manage to add to the opener, and the game ended 1-0 after 90 minutes.

Nigeria’s girls are now only 90 minutes from an appearance at the India 2022 U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup while Ethiopia needs a huge performance if they are to come to Nigeria and pick a ticket to their first-ever Women’s World Cup at any level. The second leg has been slated for Saturday June 4th.
