Injured Leon Balogun May Have Played His Last Game for Rangers
Nigeria and Rangers defender Leon Balogun may have played his final match for the Scottish giants after suffering a serious injury.
The 36-year-old centre-back, who has made 26 appearances for Rangers this season, was forced off the pitch during their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against Athletic Bilbao. He picked up a cheekbone fracture and is now facing a spell on the sidelines.
Balogun’s contract with Rangers is set to expire in June, and with just five league games left in the season, many believe he has already played his last match for the club.
Although there’s no official return date for his injury, his future at Ibrox remains uncertain. Speaking after the loss to Bilbao in Spain, Balogun admitted he’s not sure what lies ahead but would love to continue at the club.
“I’ve wanted to be a Rangers player for the last ten years, since the day I arrived. Everyone knows how much I love this club. I embrace everything it stands for, and I’ve really taken it to heart. If I can stay for another season, I’ll be glad,” the former Brighton and Mainz defender told Rangers Review.
However, reports from Ibrox News suggest Balogun has likely played his last game for the club. The outlet noted that his injury problems have become frustrating for fans, and this latest setback hasn’t helped his chances of a contract extension.
Balogun is said to be one of four players expected to leave Rangers this summer, along with Tom Lawrence, Ianis Hagi, and Neraysho Kasanwirjo.
With head coach Barry Ferguson reportedly keen to continue beyond this season, the club is looking to build a younger squad. At 36, Balogun falls outside that plan.
Still, some believe the experienced Nigerian defender should be kept on, even if only as a squad player or mentor. His leadership, experience, and professionalism could help younger players settle and develop. There are even suggestions he could take on a player-coach role in the future.
While Rangers are expected to freshen up their squad and make tough decisions on expiring contracts, having someone like Balogun around could be valuable both on and off the pitch.
