Injured Bogut could still play for Australia in Rio

Australia centre Andrew Bogut remains hopeful of playing at the Rio Olympics despite his NBA season-ending knee injury.

Bogut is out for at least six weeks after bruising to his proximal tibia and distal femur during the Golden State Warriors’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in game five of the NBA Finals.

The 31-year-old travelled with the team ahead of game six on Thursday, but – while he has avoided surgery – he is out for up to eight weeks.

Australia’s first game at the Rio Games is on August 6, leaving Bogut in a race against time to be fit.

However, Basketball Australia said on Thursday that Bogut had spoken to coach Andrej Lemanis and remains “committed” to playing.

He is expected to make a further statement in the coming days.
