Ivan Toney to start for Brentford in Premier League return

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has confirmed that striker Ivan Toney will make his official return to competitive action in the Premier League this weekend.

Toney’s last Premier League appearance was 259 days ago in a match against Liverpool. Despite not playing in official matches, Toney has been training with the team since September 2023.

Toney’s return is a significant development for Brentford, and Frank expressed his excitement about the striker’s comeback.

The manager mentioned that Toney is “very committed” to the Brentford cause and praised his “special character.” Toney, who faced disciplinary action with a £50,000 fine for 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules, has been actively training and participating with the team.

“He’s buzzing like an Under-8,” Frank said, highlighting Toney’s enthusiasm for returning to action. The striker will not only start in the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest but will also captain the side. Frank is confident in Toney’s readiness and sees his return as a significant boost for Brentford.

Describing Toney as a “special character” and a fantastic person to be around, Frank emphasized the positive energy, smile, and positivity that the striker brings to the team. He also noted Toney’s competitive spirit and desire to win, making his return feel like a “new signing” for Brentford.

While the return of Ivan Toney continues to dominate the pre-match talks, both managers will be without a combined nine players who are representing their national teams at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria Super Eagles players, Frank Onyeka (Brentford) and Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest) will be watching the game at opposition ends, wishing their respective teams get maximum points to boost their tally in the Premier League.

The match will kickoff by 6:30pm on Saturday, January 20, 2024. The other Premier League fixture of the day sees Arsenal face Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium by 3;30pm.
