Iwobi, Aribo decisive as Everton edge Southampton in Premier League clash

Everton record second consecutive win

Nigerian midfield duo Joe Aribo and Alex Iwobi showed their quality as their sides faced in the Premier League. The match ended 2-1 in favour of Iwobi’s Everton after a battling performance from the Toffees away from home.

After a drab first half between the sides, it took only four minutes of the second half for some life to be injected into the match, setting off a crazy five minute spell in which all the goals were scored.

The home side took the lead in the 49th minute through the impressive Aribo. The 25-year-old midfielder received the ball from Che Adams on the edge of the box before jinking his way into the box and sending a low drive into the far corner beyond the reach of Jordan Pickford. It was his second league goal for the Saints since joining from Rangers in the summer.

Everton responded immediately and drew level through on-loan Wolves defender Conor Coady in the 52nd minute. The England international was on hand to fire home from about three yards out after Amadou Onana headed a deep cross across the face of goal.

The Toffees quickly turned the game on its head two minutes later as Iwobi set up Dwight McNeil for the winner. The Nigerian midfielder received the ball in a pocket of space in the Southampton half before delivering a peach of a cross into the box, allowing the arriving McNeil to smash his effort in from a tight angle.

Frank Lampard’s Everton have now won their consecutive matches this season after failing to win any of their first four. The Toffees owe much of their recent success to the form of Iwobi, who has assisted four of his side’s last six goals.
