Iwobi backs Akpom to get Super Eagles chance
Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi has backed fellow Arsenal Academy product Chuba Akpom to get his chance with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Akpom enjoyed a stellar 2022/2023 season at Middlesbrough, scoring 29 goals in all competitions this season but that was not enough to get him a call-up to the Super Eagles team for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers vs Sierra Leone.
While the wait continues, Alex Iwobi believes Akpom will one day get his chance with the Nigeria National team having pledged allegiance to his fatherland.
Iwobi told Brila FM “That’s up to the coach in his selection unfortunately it’s very difficult because of the strikers we have who are on form.
“I’m sure hopefully he will get a chance because he’s had a great season but it’s very difficult for the coach to pick strikers to come. He just has to be patience I’m sure he’ll get his chance.”
Iwobi also spoke about Eberechi Eze who has committed to his country of birth England ahead of Nigeria. The Everton midfielder revealed he tried convincing Eze to play for Nigeria.
” I spoke to Ebere Eze to try and come but then obviously he’s never had the opportunity to come but I wish him all the best with England as well,” Iwobi added.
