Jack Draper Crashes Out in Miami as Indian Wells Stars Struggle

There will be no men’s singles Sunshine Double in 2025 after Jack Draper lost his first match at the Miami Open. The other Indian Wells semi-finalists also suffered early exits.

Draper, who recently won his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells and reached a career-high ranking of world No 7, was beaten 7-6(2), 7-6(3) by Jakub Mensik in his opening match in Miami.

Mensik played brilliantly. The 19-year-old is seen as one of the best young talents in men’s tennis, and he showed why. He hit 21 aces without a single double fault and controlled both tiebreaks to earn his sixth career win over a top-10 player.

It was a disappointing result for Draper, but he faced an opponent who was in top form. And Draper wasn’t the only Indian Wells star to struggle in Miami.

Holger Rune, the 11th seed and Indian Wells runner-up, also went out on Saturday. He lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) to Reilly Opelka in the second round. Rune missed his chance to return to the ATP top 10 with the defeat.

Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, who lost in the Indian Wells semi-finals to Draper and Rune, were both knocked out on Friday. Second seed Alcaraz, the 2022 Miami Open champion and one of the favourites this year, lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to David Goffin.

Earlier that day, seventh seed and 2023 Miami winner Medvedev suffered a heavy 6-2, 6-3 loss to world No 56 Jaume Munar. Medvedev has now dropped to world No 10 in the ATP Live Rankings and could fall out of the top 10 if Alex de Minaur wins his third-round match against Joao Fonseca on Monday.

Draper is the first Indian Wells men’s singles champion to lose his opening match in Miami since Dominic Thiem in 2019. But this time, it wasn’t just him.

For the first time since the Masters 1000 format started in 1990, all four men’s singles semi-finalists from Indian Wells have lost their first matches at the Miami Open.
