Jamal Musiala Suffers Serious Injury in Bayern’s Club World Cup Defeat to PSG
Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala suffered a serious leg injury during Saturday’s Club World Cup quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, overshadowing the 2-0 defeat and sending shockwaves through both teams and supporters.
The 22-year-old midfielder was stretchered off late in the first half after a painful collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Musiala was chasing a forward pass when he collided with Donnarumma, who came rushing out to clear the ball. As the two players met, Musiala’s ankle appeared to get caught between the keeper’s arms and body, twisting awkwardly under the force of the challenge.
Players and fans were left stunned. Donnarumma immediately dropped to his knees in tears, clearly distraught at what had happened. Bayern teammates, including Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman, and Joshua Kimmich, looked visibly shaken, turning away from the distressing scene.
Medical staff rushed onto the pitch and quickly assessed the injury. Musiala was carefully placed on a stretcher and taken straight to a waiting ambulance outside the stadium.
Television broadcasters chose to cut away from the footage, sparing viewers the full view of the incident.
Bayern confirmed shortly after the match: “Jamal Musiala has to be carried off the field injured. We’re with you, Jamal!”
Musiala was replaced at half-time by Serge Gnabry, but the mood among the Bayern camp remained sombre.
Fans flooded social media with messages of support. One wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Absolutely horrific injury. You can’t even blame Donnarumma. Just a freak accident. Wishing Jamal the best.” Another posted: “Awful to see. No one wants this for any player. Speedy recovery, Jamal.”
The exact nature of the injury hasn’t yet been confirmed, but early signs suggest it could involve the ankle or lower leg bones. If a fracture is involved, Musiala could face a recovery period of 6 to 12 months or longer.
The injury took the focus away from a heated match in which PSG scored through Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele, and still managed to progress despite finishing the game with only nine men. Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez were both sent off late in the second half.
But all eyes remained on Musiala. What was meant to be a big night of football became a sobering reminder of how quickly things can change in the game.
