Johnson voted PGA Tour Player of the Year

Dustin Johnson was named PGA Tour Player of the Year on Tuesday after enjoying one of the best seasons in the past decade.

The 32-year-old South Carolina native ended his wait for a first major by winning theĀ U.S. Open in June, then won his next start at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and topped it off with a FedEx Cup playoff win at the BMW Championship.

Johnson went on to help the United States regain the Ryder Cup this month and has now landed an award which voted for by Tour members who played in at least 15 events this season.

ā€œOn behalf of the PGA Tour, my congratulations to Dustin Johnson for his outstanding play on big stages during the 2015-16 season,ā€ said PGA TourĀ Commissioner Tim Finchem.

“His hard work on the golf course and in the gym paid off with the finest season of his career, and the member vote reflects the respect his peers have for him.ā€

Johnson finished the season with 15Ā top-10 finishesĀ – 11 of which he was in the top five – and missed only one cut.

The closest competitors behind Johnson in the balloting were Jason Day, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy –Ā who edged Johnson at the Tour Championship to win the FedEx Cup –Ā and Henrik Stenson.

Johnson, who has won at least one tournament every year since becoming a full-time member ofĀ Tour in 2008, has 12 career victories.
