Manchester United have confirmed that Jonny Evans will stay at the club in a new role after retiring from football at the end of the 2024/25 season.
In an official statement, United announced that the former defender has been appointed “Head of Loans and Pathways”, a job focused on helping young academy players grow and prepare for the first team. Evans will also support the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, and academy director to improve how young talent is developed.
The 36-year-old Northern Irishman, who came through United’s academy and enjoyed a long playing career, is currently working towards his UEFA A coaching licence.
Speaking after his appointment, Evans officially confirmed his retirement from football, saying:
“I want to announce my retirement from playing, not with sadness but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead.
I’m looking forward to working with the next generation of players and helping them reach their full potential. Having experienced loan moves myself, I know how important they are in a player’s journey.”
Evans said he is proud of his 20-year career and thanked fans, coaches, and team-mates for their support.
There are also reports that Darren Fletcher could join the academy staff too, possibly taking charge of the Under-18s, after Adam Lawrence’s departure.
While some critics argue that former players are being hired out of loyalty rather than merit, many at the club believe Evans’ deep understanding of the Manchester United culture makes him the ideal mentor.
Director of football Jason Wilcox praised the move, saying:
“Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players. His experience and knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be a huge benefit.”
