Judoka Enku Ewa Ekuta Eyes Fourth National Sports Festival Gold in Ogun State
As the 22nd National Sports Festival kicks off in Ogun State from May 18 to 30, all eyes in the judo arena will be on Enku Ewa Ekuta, a name synonymous with excellence in Nigerian judo. A three-time gold medalist at the Festival, Enku is aiming for an unprecedented fourth gold as she leads Team Akwa Ibom into battle.
Born into a judo-centric family, Enku’s pedigree in the sport is unquestionable. Her mother is an Olympian, while her father brings years of coaching experience to the mat. With such a rich legacy behind her, it’s little wonder that Enku has risen to become one of Nigeria’s most formidable forces in judo.
Speaking at the Team Akwa Ibom camp in Ogun State, Enku expressed her optimism ahead of the competition. “I have put in the work and so the work will show,” she stated confidently. She credited her coaches for refining her skills and ensuring she’s well-prepared for the challenge ahead.
Enku’s journey into judo began at a young age, inspired by her parents’ passion and commitment to the sport. She recalls being particularly motivated watching her mother compete at the Sports Festival in Ogun back in 2007. “Going to training with them and watching my mom compete motivated me to join the sport,” she said.
Her childhood love for combat also played a part. “When I was younger, I loved fighting,” she said with a laugh. “So I decided to channel that zeal into fighting for medals.”
Looking ahead, Enku’s ambitions go beyond the National Sports Festival. “I am keeping my eyes on the Olympics. I’m training towards that. The Olympics is the highest sporting event in the world . I’m dreaming towards that,” she concluded.
