Kanu Nwankwo trains with Enyimba FC

In a surprising return to the pitch, former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo, known affectionately as ‘Papilo’, joined Enyimba FC in training ahead of their 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday one fixture.

The 48-year-old, who is currently the Chairman of Enyimba FC, took a break from his administrative duties to inspire the team with his presence and expertise.

Dressed in a striking white kit, Kanu dazzled alongside the players at the Enyimba FC stadium in Aba, showcasing his timeless skill and passion for the game. The training session, led by Coach Yemi Olarenwaju, was a blend of intense drills and motivational guidance, with Kanu contributing both on and off the pitch.

Kanu Nwankwo, born on August 1, 1976, is celebrated as one of the greatest African footballers of all time. His illustrious career spanned multiple clubs and continents, including notable stints at Nigerian club Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Dutch side Ajax, Inter Milan of Italy, and English clubs Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, and Portsmouth. As a member of the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’, Kanu was a key figure in the team’s historic unbeaten Premier League campaign.

Kanu Nwankwo, recently shared insights into how his participation in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) impacted his game time during Arsenal's historic Premier League invincible season.

Throughout his career, Kanu achieved remarkable success, including winning the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and an Olympic gold medal. His trophy cabinet also boasts a FIFA U-17 World Cup medal, UEFA Cup, Intercontinental Cup, three Eredivisie titles, three FA Cups, and two African Player of the Year awards.

In the Premier League, Kanu made the third-most substitute appearances in history, coming off the bench 118 times. His contributions have cemented his status as one of the best players in African football history.
