Kelechi Iheanacho confirmed fit and ready for AFCON

Super Eagles Coach Jose Peseiro has confirmed that Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is fit and ready for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Iheanacho had been undergoing treatment for a muscular injury sustained at his English club, and so did not take part in the Super Eagles camp activities in Abu Dhabi.

The Super Eagles concluded close door camping in the Middle East with a friendly loss vs Guinea on Monday, January 8, 2024.

With Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface ruled out with injury sustained in camp, Peseiro has offered update on the teams other injury nursing striker.

Peseiro said “Kelechi arrives in Cote d’Ivoire. He has finished the treatment at Leicester City.”

Iheanacho’s return to the squad adds depth and firepower to the Super Eagles’ attacking options with Terem Moffi also heading to Cote d’Ivoire as replacement for Boniface .

Nigeria is set to kick off its 2023 AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 3:00 pm.

Subsequently, they will face the host nation, Ivory Coast, on Thursday, January 18, and conclude the group stage with a match against Guinea-Bissau on Monday, January 22.
