Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his excitement about joining Middlesbrough but admits he has “unfinished business” at Sevilla.
The Nigerian striker moved to the English Championship club on loan until the end of the season after struggling for game time at Sevilla. Despite his short spell in Spain, Iheanacho still holds the club in high regard and remains open to a future return.
“I’m very excited to be here. It’s a wonderful place, and I’m happy to be here,” Iheanacho said during his official unveiling at Middlesbrough, as reported by TF.
However, he also spoke fondly about Sevilla, saying, “It’s good to experience a different environment, but Sevilla is a great club. I loved my time there, and I’ll be delighted to return.”
Iheanacho found limited opportunities at Sevilla following the arrival of fellow Nigerian Akor Adams from Montpellier and manager García Pimienta’s preference for Isaac Romero.
Now back in England, the former Leicester City forward hopes his experience in the Premier League will help him make an impact in the Championship.
“I am focused on what I can achieve here. I can’t wait to get started. It’s a great club, and the Championship is a competitive league. We have a strong team,” he added.
Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick believes Iheanacho’s quality and experience will be key in the club’s push for promotion.
“We’re delighted to have Kelechi. His quality is obvious, and he knows what it takes to succeed at this level. He’s played in the Premier League for years and is a top player,” Carrick told the Northern Echo.
Iheanacho joined Sevilla on a free transfer last summer, signing a two-year contract with an option for a third. Middlesbrough will cover 80% of his €2 million annual salary, with additional bonuses if they secure promotion to the Premier League.
