Kenneth Omeruo reveals what Super Eagles stars must do to make Eric Chelle succeed

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has called on his teammates to show dedication and commitment to their new head coach, Erik Chelle.

Chelle, who was appointed last week to replace interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, officially took charge on Monday in Abuja. The Malian coach has signed a two-year contract, which could be extended if he successfully leads Nigeria to the World Cup.

Speaking during a live session on X with fellow Super Eagles player Wilfred Ndidi, Omeruo described Chelle’s arrival as a fresh opportunity for players, especially those who have not been playing regularly for their clubs.

“Everyone has to be serious now,” Omeruo said. “It’s like an open trial because some of us haven’t been playing regularly. We have to show the manager that we deserve a place in the team if invited.”

Omeruo also praised Chelle’s track record with Mali, noting their strong performances at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as evidence of the coach’s tactical ability and organisational skills.

“Judging from the way the Malian team played, not just in friendlies but also at AFCON, you can see an organised structure,” he said. “I think he has something to give to the team. With the level of talent in the Super Eagles, he wouldn’t have any problem making us play the way he wants.”

Omeruo believes Chelle’s attention to detail and tactical expertise could help the Super Eagles reach their full potential.

In addition to managing the senior team, Chelle will also oversee the Super Eagles B team as they prepare for the 8th African Nations Championship.
