Lamine Yamal Continues to Amaze with Record-Breaking Performance in Champions League

After a standout European Championship last summer, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal is continuing to leave spectators in awe with his remarkable performances. On Tuesday night, he made history in the Champions League by becoming the youngest player ever to score and assist in the competition, playing a crucial role in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Benfica to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

This season, Yamal has already contributed to 28 goals, bringing him closer to 60 goal contributions for both club and country—and he’s still just 17 years old.

His confidence on the field is extraordinary for someone so young. Against Benfica, he showcased his skill with a brilliant assist and a spectacular goal. After a dazzling run into the box, he threaded a perfect pass to Raphinha at the far post, who finished with a volley. Then, it was Yamal’s turn to find the net. From the edge of the box, he fired a brilliant strike into the far corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

“Lamine’s goal was spectacular,” said Raphinha. “It shows what he is—a player with tremendous quality.”

Barcelona won 3-1 on the night, advancing 4-1 on aggregate to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick praised Yamal’s performance, noting, “Lamine hadn’t scored for a while, over a month and six games. He’s happy because it was a very important goal for us. It was a brilliant effort. We are all happy for him because he’s a great kid and a fantastic player.”
