Leon Balogun aims to secure Rangers future amid uncertainty

Nigeria and Rangers defender Leon Balogun is eager to extend his stay with the Glasgow-based club beyond the summer. However, his hopes for a contract extension face uncertainty due to various factors.

Balogun, 35, has experienced a mixed season since rejoining Rangers from Queens Park Rangers last summer on a free transfer, featuring in only 16 games across all competitions under manager Philippe Clement.

His last league start was in January during a 3-0 victory over Hibernian, with his recent appearance coming in Rangers’ 2-0 Scottish Cup win against Hearts, where compatriot Cyriel Dessers netted twice.

The Nigerian defender’s earlier contract saga with Rangers adds to the uncertainty surrounding his future. Renewal talks broke down during his previous stint at the club due to concerns about his abilities and injury history, leading to a fall-out between then-manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and the club.

Despite enjoying playing time under former manager Michael Beale, Balogun saw his opportunities diminish following Clement’s appointment. With his contract set to expire at the end of May, Balogun remains hopeful of initiating discussions regarding his future with the club.

While Balogun expresses optimism, it appears unlikely that Rangers will offer him a new deal, primarily due to his age and reduced mobility. Additionally, Clement’s preference for other defensive options, notably Connor Goldson, suggests limited opportunities for Balogun in the future.
