Lesotho Coach responds to controversy over Teboho Mokoena’s Yellow Cards

Lesotho head coach Leslie Notsi has reacted to the debate over Teboho Mokoena’s eligibility after South Africa’s 2-0 win against Lesotho last Friday.

The issue revolves around claims that Mokoena should have been suspended for the match due to receiving two yellow cards earlier in the qualifiers. This has sparked discussions and possible appeals from Lesotho and other teams in the group, including Nigeria.

Mokhosi Mohapi, secretary-general of the Lesotho Football Association, confirmed that a formal complaint has been sent to FIFA and CAF for investigation.

When asked about the situation, Notsi remained neutral. Speaking to Soccer Laduma, he said:

“On this matter, I can’t say much. My focus was on today’s match against Rwanda.”

The Lesotho coach insisted that the matter should be handled by the right authorities.

“I think that is for the officials in charge. I heard they will file complaints, but I don’t know if they have done it yet.”

If Lesotho’s appeal is successful, they would be awarded three points, moving up to nine. This would also reduce South Africa’s lead to 10 points, putting them just three points ahead of Nigeria with four matches left.

The Super Eagles will continue their 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September, starting with a home game against Rwanda before travelling to face South Africa.
