Lewandowski finally breaks World Cup duck to help Poland beat Saudi and throw Argentina’s Group open

Robert Lewandowski has finally scored his first-ever goal at the World Cup as he powered Poland to a 2-0 win against Saudi Arabia to throw Group c wide open.

The Barcelona forward who has played in four World Cup games without scoring finally got one after five attempts.

In form Napoli midfielder, Piotr Zielinski scored the first goal of the game in the 39 minutes – The goal was the combination of effort from English-born right back Matty Cash and Robert Lewandowski before Zielinski finished with great aplomb.

After securing a shocking but a convincing win against Argentina in their first game, Saudi Arabia needed a win against Poland to become the first nation to qualify for the last 16 but failed to secure the win.

In the added time of the first half, Saudi Arabia who were by far the best team in the first half got a chance to pull level from the spot kick.

But Salem Al Dawsari who scored a great goal against Argentina in Saudi’s 2-1 win missed the penalty – his attempt was parried by Wojciech Szczesny to another Saudi player, but even the rebound was well saved by the former Arsenal goalie.

The second half was more balanced and Robert Lewandowski eventually got his first World Cup goal after a mistake at the back gifted him a chance which he buried with class.

The former Bayern Munich striker was emotional after scoring his 77th international goal matching Pele’s record and his first goal at the World Cup.

Polan now go top of Group c with 4 points, Saudi Arabia 2nd with 3 points. Later today Argentina and Lionel Messi tackle Mexico in a must-win game.

All the nations in this group have a chance to qualify and it will go down to the wire on the last fixtures of the Group.
