Libyan FA Issues statement after Super Eagles’ Airport ordeal
The Libyan Football Association (FA) has responded to reports of the Super Eagles of Nigeria being stranded at Al Abraq International Airport, expressing regret over the situation but attributing the ordeal to logistical challenges.
The Nigerian team’s travel plans were disrupted when their flight, originally scheduled to land in Benghazi, was diverted to Al Abraq airport, leaving the players and officials stranded for nearly 15 hours without food or proper accommodations.
Libyan FA Expresses Concern
In an official statement posted on their X (formerly Twitter) account, the Libyan FA addressed the incident, saying:
“We are deeply concerned about the recent reports surrounding the diversion of the Nigerian national team’s flight ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya.”
The statement explained that the diversion and delays were due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or other logistical issues that can impact international travel.
“While we regret any inconvenience caused, it is essential to note that such incidents can occur due to routine airport procedures. We want to assure our Nigerian counterparts that the flight diversion was not intentional.”
Super Eagles File Complaint with CAF
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reported the incident to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and confirmed that they have received a response.
Meanwhile, players expressed frustration over the treatment. Victor Osimhen described the situation as being akin to “a hostage situation,” while striker Victor Boniface made a plea for someone to inform his grandmother that he was safe.
Uncertain Match Plans
The ordeal has thrown the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifier preparations into chaos, with growing concerns that they might withdraw from the match against Libya, scheduled for Tuesday, October 15. The NFF is currently assessing the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of the players before making a final decision.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes now hang in the balance, with both CAF’s response and any further logistical arrangements likely to determine whether the match proceeds as planned.
