Lionel Messi returns to Rosario as Football World Mourns Jorge Messi

Lionel Messi has returned to Rosario following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68, as tributes continue to pour in from across the football world.

Jorge died on Saturday in Rosario after being treated for an illness. The Sanatorio Centro confirmed his death but said it would not provide further details about his medical condition out of respect for the family’s privacy.

Jorge helped guide Lionel’s career from the early days in Rosario and later became his representative as Messi built one of the greatest careers in football history.

The football community has responded with an outpouring of support.

Barcelona, where Messi became a global superstar, paid tribute to Jorge and recognised the role he played in bringing his son to the club.

“FC Barcelona wants to thank Jorge Messi for his commitment to our Club, for entrusting us with the beginnings and the most glorious years of his son Leo’s football career.”

Real Madrid also released a message of condolence despite its historic rivalry with Barcelona.

“Our club wants to express its condolences to Leo, his family and all his loved ones.”

The Argentine Football Association also honoured Jorge, with a minute’s silence and black armbands across football matches in the country.

Rodrigo De Paul also found a way to show his support for Messi. After scoring for Inter Miami against Monterrey, the Argentine midfielder lifted his shirt to reveal Messi’s No. 10 jersey underneath.

Messi was absent from the match as he travelled back to Rosario to be with his family.

For now, Messi and his family are still mourning privately in Rosario.  May he rest in peace.
