Lloyd’s criticism is like a background music – Andy Murray

Andy Murray has dismissed David Lloyd’s comments after the world number two was accused by the former Davis Cup captain of not doing enough to promote British tennis.

Lloyd claimed Murray failed to “go out of his way” to present the game and encourage children to take up the sport.

Both Tim Henman and Murray’s brother Jamie have leapt to the defence of the former Wimbledon and US Open winner, with Henman pointing out that the Scot’s successes have created plenty of interest in the sport.

And Murray, in a media conference ahead of Great Britain’s Davis Cup final against Belgium later this week, said he was paying little attention to Lloyd’s remarks.

“It was a bit of a shame,” he said. “But it’s obviously not been the first time that’s happened.

“It’s a bit like background music – you know it’s there but you’re not really listening.

“We may not get the outcome that we want, but it won’t be through lack of trying or lack of care from anyone in the team.”
