Lookman Names Reece James, Van Dijk as Toughest Opponents
Nigeria and Atlético Madrid forward Ademola Lookman has named Reece James and Virgil van Dijk as the two hardest defenders he has faced in his career.
The Super Eagles star said both players are difficult to play against because of their strength, intelligence and ability to stop attacking players in one-on-one situations.
Lookman made the comments during an interview with ESPN, where he was asked to mention the toughest opponent he has come up against.
The 28-year-old has played against many top defenders during his time in England, Germany, Italy and now Spain.
He previously played for clubs such as Everton F.C., Fulham F.C. and Leicester City F.C. in the Premier League.
Lookman has enjoyed some memorable matches against Liverpool F.C.. He has faced the Reds seven times, scoring once and providing one assist.
One of his best moments came in December 2021 when he scored the winning goal in Leicester City’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the King Power Stadium. Van Dijk played in Liverpool’s defence during that match.
The Nigerian has also faced Chelsea F.C. several times and came up against James in both domestic and European competitions.
Lookman is currently enjoying an impressive spell at Atlético Madrid after joining the Spanish side from Atalanta BC in January.
Since moving to Spain, he has become one of Atlético’s key attacking players. He scored on his debut in a Copa del Rey win over Real Betis and has continued to shine in important matches.
One of his biggest moments came in Atlético’s Champions League quarter-final victory over FC Barcelona, where he scored the winning goal that sent his team into the semi-finals.
Lookman has made 19 appearances for Atlético Madrid in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.
Atlético recently played a 1-1 draw against Arsenal F.C. in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash as they continue their push for a place in the final.
