Lookman Set for Bigger Role at Atlético Madrid After Bright Pre-Season Start
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is expected to play a key role in Atlético Madrid’s attack this season, with manager Diego Simeone and his coaching staff demanding even more from the Nigerian.
Lookman made an early impression in pre-season, scoring twice in just five minutes during Atlético’s 4-1 friendly win over Getafe.
The 28-year-old joined Atlético during the last winter transfer window and made 24 appearances for the club last season. He scored nine goals and provided four assists.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Lookman scored a goal every 153 minutes, a better rate than Julián Álvarez and Antoine Griezmann. When his assists are included, he was involved in a goal every 106 minutes, the best rate among Atlético players during the 2025-26 season.
The club’s coaching staff are pleased with his progress during the opening weeks of pre-season and expect him to maintain that level this season.
His performances against Getafe were encouraging, but the focus during pre-season has gone beyond goals. Simeone and his assistants have been working on Atlético’s style of play, movement and building stronger partnerships between the players.
“Lookman is flying,” has been the feeling around the dressing room, with the Nigerian said to be in excellent physical condition and fully committed during training.
After several months of adapting to life at Atlético, expectations are now higher. The coaching staff want Lookman to take more responsibility, not only with his football but also as a leader on the pitch.
His improved fitness has also been welcomed after a number of problems during the spring affected his ability to complete some matches.
Simeone is continuing to work with Lookman on different areas of his game, including both his attacking and defensive duties, as Atlético prepare for the new season.
