Maduka Okoye Banned for Two Months Over Illegal Betting
Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been banned from football for two months after being found guilty of illegal betting.
Okoye, who plays for Serie A club Udinese and the Nigerian national team, was investigated along with three of his friends over suspicious bets worth ₦214 million (around €120,000).
Suspicious Yellow Card Sparked the Case
The investigation began after a match on 11 March 2024, when Udinese played Lazio in Italy’s top league. Okoye was shown a yellow card in the 64th minute for time-wasting while his team was leading 2-1.
Soon after, betting authorities noticed a lot of unusual bets placed specifically on Okoye getting a yellow card. Most of these bets came from areas near Udine, and they led to huge winnings.
Okoye and three others were later investigated, and in June 2025, the case was sent to the disciplinary commission.
Avoids Harsher Punishment
There were fears that Okoye could be banned for up to four years if he was found guilty of sporting fraud. However, the final decision only found him guilty of illegal betting, which carries a lighter punishment.
Suspension Starts in August
Okoye’s suspension will begin on 18 August 2025, when Udinese play Carrarese in the Coppa Italia. He will miss the first six matches of the new Serie A season, but can return to football on 19 October 2025.
The 25-year-old, who has made 18 appearances for the Super Eagles, joined Udinese in 2023 after leaving Watford.
Although this ruling brings an end to the investigation, it has still left a mark on his reputation, especially as he looks forward to an important season with both club and country.
