Man City start Club World Cup with 2-0 win over Wydad Casablanca
Manchester City began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Moroccan team Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia.
Phil Foden was the star of the match, scoring one goal and setting up another. He looked sharp and confident, a big change after a difficult season where he struggled with injuries and lost his place in the England squad.
City manager Pep Guardiola started two new signings – Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. Reijnders stood out in midfield, showing calm and control. Cherki also looked good in attack.
Foden scored after just one minute and 43 seconds. Later, his corner helped Jeremy Doku score the second goal.
The match was played at Lincoln Financial Field, an NFL stadium in Philadelphia. Around 37,000 fans came to watch, which was a decent crowd for a weekday lunchtime kick-off.
However, the game wasn’t perfect. A fan ran onto the pitch to protest about animal rights, and Wydad fans let off a red smoke bomb during the second half, making it hard to see the pitch for a few moments.
City ended the game with 10 men after young defender Rico Lewis was sent off late on.
Guardiola is expected to spend over £300 million this summer, and some big changes are already happening. Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker didn’t travel to the US and may leave the club soon.
But this match was all about Foden. After a tough few months, he showed he’s ready to fight for his place again.
