Manchester City Beat Bournemouth in Kevin De Bruyne’s Last Game at Etihad

Manchester City gave Kevin De Bruyne a winning farewell at the Etihad Stadium, beating Bournemouth 3-1 on Tuesday. The result puts City in third place in the Premier League with one match left.

City now have 68 points, two more than Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. All four teams are still fighting for a top-five finish, which would mean playing in next season’s Champions League. Bournemouth are 11th, and this defeat ends their hopes of European football next year.

Both teams finished the game with 10 players. City’s Mateo Kovacic was sent off in the 67th minute for stopping a clear chance by pulling back Evanilson. Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook was also shown a red card in the 73rd minute after a dangerous tackle on Nico Gonzalez.

City started strongly, and Omar Marmoush scored a stunning goal in the 14th minute from 30 yards out. Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 in the 38th minute after Ilkay Gundogan passed the ball back to him in the box. Nico Gonzalez scored the third goal in the 89th minute after a strong run and a powerful finish.

Bournemouth got a late goal when Daniel Jebbison took advantage of a poor pass from Ruben Dias and scored past goalkeeper Ederson.

Earlier in the match, Bournemouth missed a great chance to equalise when Evanilson hit the post after meeting Marcus Tavernier’s cross.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said: “From the start, you could see City were playing with high energy. They scored one of their best goals of the season, and it made things difficult for us.”

City midfielder Rodri made his first appearance in eight months after coming on late in the game. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner had been out since September with a serious knee injury.
