Manchester United board fear Jose Mourinho will resign before next season

Manchester United’s board fear that Jose Mourinho will not be their manager beyond this season as their campaign continues to unravel, according to reports.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ has watched as his side have fallen 15 points adrift of runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City and are now in a battle to finish in the top four. Mourinho has famously never lasted more than three seasons at a club, though the Daily Mail report that his departure could come even earlier this time around.

It is claimed that Mourinho is increasingly isolating himself from the rest of the club, save for his own coaching team, and is spending less and less time in Manchester. The Portuguese coach never found a house in the city and has been staying in a hotel for the past 18 months, and still very much sees home as being in London.

His number of trips back to the capital to see his family has increased recently – and he spent Christmas Day there – which has ‘caused some alarm’ among United’s hierarchy. Mourinho’s recent comments in the media have also had ripples in the United boardroom, with his criticism of United’s lack of spending relative to their neighbours seen as a direct attack on their transfer dealings.

He has previously been linked with replacing Unai Emery at Paris Saint-Germain, and he would welcome a move to the French giants were it presented to him. Mourinho has been increasingly tetchy in his press conferences since defeat in the Manchester derby let City escape at the top of the table, and many at the club now fear his constant desire to escape Manchester could soon become permanent.
